Passionate about pillows

Pillows often get overlooked when it comes to sleep comfort. Whilst the mattress may be the star of the show, choosing the right pillow is a vital bedding choice – get it wrong and you increase the chances of discomfort and neck pain in the morning.

The key here is support, the correct pillow will support both your neck and head keeping your spine in perfect alignment so you can sleep deeper for longer.

Choose a FIRM or MEDIUM SUPPORT pillow.
A thicker pillow will support your head and neck for perfect spinal alignment.

Choose a MEDIUM SUPPORT pillow.
Deeper sides provide gentle support and prevent head tilting.

Choose a SOFT SUPPORT pillow.
A thinner pillow, with softer fillings, avoids putting strain on the neck.

Synthetic pillows are often called microfibre pillows or hollow fibre pillows. Essentially they are all made with man-made polyester fibres that are spun together into a denser filling. Hollowfibre/Microfibre pillows tend to be very lightweight and airy. Hollow gaps between fibres mean it’s breathable and allow air to circulate freely.

These pillows are fantastic if you’re on a budget but do tend to have a shorter lifespan.

Duck and goose feathers are found in many lower-end firm pillows. They are cost-effective but larger and heavier than down. Down is a cosy, and airy choice made from the very softest feathers. This helps to create a lofty, cloud-like feel with a light level of support. If you are looking for the ultimate comfort and luxury sleep experience then you really can’t get better than down.

A combination of larger feathers and delicate down is often found in medium feel pillows. This will almost always be more comfortable  – giving you the softness of down and support of feathers.

Wool pillows are filled with tiny wool balls that give outstanding head and neck support and come in a zipped percale cotton cover that can be removed and washed on a hot cycle, and tumble dried. The zip also lets you get at the wool so that it can be fluffed up thoroughly whenever needed.

There are so many great things about wool but one of the many unknown facts is that dust mites don’t like it! Wool has microscopic pores that respond effectively to changes in humidity making it unpleasant for the growth and breeding of the dust mite. Dust mites cause problems for people with allergies so it is a great product for someone worried about conditions such as asthma. The Enchanted House Dartmoor Wool Pillow is a great example of how wool helps to balance thermal insulation meaning it is warm in winter and cool in the summer.

Memory foam is a form of polyurethane with chemicals added to make it more flexible or elastic. when it is cool, memory foam is more viscous or firm as it warms, it becomes more elastic or soft and flexible. These traits make pillows like the Idyll Sleep Memory Pillow conform to your body shape. It reacts to body heat and pressure allowing it to mold to your neck and head in seconds while returning back to its original shape once heat and pressure are removed.

Natural latex pillows have a similar feel to memory foam but are a bit more bouncy and will contour and spring back to support your neck. Unlike memory foam pillows, they don’t suffer from overheating, in fact, they will help to maintain a neutral temperature all night so you won’t need to flip the pillow over to the cool side. Latex is durable and holds its shape well, longer than any other type of filling, and is naturally resistant to mould and dust mites. Duvets For All Seasons

A good duvet and bedding can make the world of difference to your sleep quality. If you want to wake up refreshed and revitalised then there are two important factors to consider – the filling and tog rating.

Regulating body temperature is a key ingredient when it comes to sleep and duvets are an important part of this equation.  Waking up because we are too hot or too cold is a common problem that affects not only the length of our sleep but our performance and mood throughout the following day.

Tog Ratings

You’ve probably seen tog ratings attached to duvets and wondered what it all means. Ultimately, tog is an indication of how well a duvet traps warm air around you and thereby keeps you insulated. The Tog scale ranges from 1 tog (the coolest) to 15 tog (the warmest).  You need a 1-7 tog duvet in Summer to keep you cool, whereas 10.5 or above is ideal for the colder Winter months.

A practical choice for allergy sufferers

Synthetic duvets are hypo-allergenic and less likely to aggravate allergies than feathers and down. Synthetics are generally easier to wash, quicker to dry, and easy to care for; although temperature regulation will suffer compared to natural fillings.

Mother Nature’s Cuddle

Natural fillings are a great choice if you’re looking for a soft, lightweight duvet that delivers dreamy comfort. They are hard to beat in keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer, with the natural fibres helping your body to “breathe”.

Enhance With A Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers have grown in popularity over the years, initially as a way to revive a tired mattress, but now increasingly as a way to add another layer of luxurious comfort and support.

Placed beneath your sheets on top of your mattress, a topper can be an inexpensive solution to improve the feel of your bed without actually forking out on a new mattress. Choose a soft topper if your mattress is too firm or vice versa if it’s too soft. Of course, if you’re mattress is sagging, damaged, or past its sell-by date then no amount of bedding can save it – you should look to replace it!

Think natural

Whilst mattress toppers now come in a variety of specifications, we recommend toppers upholstered with natural fillings – and in most cases wool (although alpaca fibres and horsehair are also used).

As is the case with mattresses and bedding, wool helps to regulate body temperature, wick away body moisture, and keep you feeling fresh throughout the night. A natural filling of the highest calibre, it acts as a superb insulator and is the perfect anti-allergenic filling. The fact that it also provides a sumptuously soft feel is just the icing on the topper.

Protect Your Investment

We always recommend the use of a protector to help keep your mattress or pillow in pristine condition.

A more practical side of bedding, they are designed to protect from spills and body fluids, whilst also protecting the sleeper from allergens such as dust mites, bed bugs, and mould.

Mattress Protectors

Pure cotton is the product of choice for mattress protectors – providing another example of those all-important temperature regulating and moisture-wicking qualities. It’s also machine washable, hypo-allergenic, and naturally soft.

Most mattress protectors are partially water resistant but not fully waterproof. Using a waterproof product will 100% protect your mattress from accidental spillages or night-time accidents – that’s particularly useful for young kids. Unlike the waterproof protectors of old (you remember the ones from the 70s and 80s) today’s products use advanced membranes to allow airflow and keep the body cool.

All of our mattress protectors are fitted with elasticated corners or straps to securely attach to your mattress.

Pillow Protector

A bedding product that does exactly what it says on the tin, pillow protectors are designed to shield your pillows from wear and tear. You’ll also get the added bonus of encouraging a healthier sleep environment. Tightly woven cotton protects against dust mites and ensures moisture wicks away before interfering with the pillow.
